Community web site
beats the big players
in marketing awards
Sydney, 27 Nov --- A self-help community Website that has
become the biggest Philippine presence on the Internet, outside of Manila, has won the
inaugural technology category of the important Multicultural Marketing Awards, organised
by the Ethnic Affairs Commission of NSW.
emanila.com won the national award against
a strong field of large enterprises.
The founders of the site recognised the need for survival
translation on-line for young second-generation Filipino Australian youth. From there it
developed to a free web-based e-mail service and eventually evolved as Australias
largest portal for Philippine related news and the promotion of services on trade,
commerce, arts, entertainment, travel and other topics.
"They have created the Philippine Website
outside of the Philippines, a site which could only be described as highly
sophisticated," says the Chair of the Ethnic Affairs Commission, Stepan
Kerkyasharian.
As well as helping young Filipino-Australians to learn
their home language, EMANILA has helped the Philippine non-profit organisations get online
by hosting community Websites.
"At the time of launching this new technology
category, I said that Australia, as the most multilingual nation on earth, stands ready to
plug into the world, in any language. Now already we have two Websites as category winners
and other winners with websites as an integral part of their project for the 2000 awards.
"I am full of admiration for people who get out there
and have a go they put in the long hours that complex technologies demand and they
succeed.
"Thats why I am particularly happy that the new
technology category, which might have been won by any of the global-wide technology
companies for giant e-commerce sites, was actually won by an ethnic community organisation
in Sydney," Mr Kerkyasharian said.
